Summary

Should ODP melting into EEP bother the Oromo? Putting aside the initial Kaayyoo, competing for Ethiopian election has become the main objective. Oromo struggle is left to take a nap. ODP has abandoned GHO for which it is the chair person and joined its foster family taking with it organizations it had been serving TPLF together. This can affect Oromo unity as well as fate of individuals that have melted like it affected all quislings. There is also no guarantee that it does not change so far existing policies if somehow it retains power. It has already started to behave as the only party. It will be difficult to give up tradition of centralized power for a group that has nostalgia for past autocratic rulers. If there is fair and free election as being promised judgement will be for the people. Oromo organizations are expected to strengthen principles of GHO the Oromo nations from possible danger. Selfishness and self-conceitedness are not to be seen among Oromo leaders. To overcome problems confronting them it may be good to form a transitional front based on Gadaa principles. After putting the people on firm base, they can go their individual ways. Nafxanyaa system had committed crime against humanity which does not have statute of limitations. After the Nazis are gone positive opinion about them remains to incriminate.

In the past Oromo had OLF to struggle for their independence or genuine union with the willing. Today OLF joined the empire democratizing groups while the original Oromo national Kaayyoo is left in the limbo. That means empire democratizers have won a battle but not the war. Still the solution remains independence or union based on freely expressed will of the people. OPDO was created by TPLF for the purpose of countering OLF nationalism and operated with close control. Now that OLF is brought in line there is no need to pretend being Oromo organization, so went with its true self and melted into Ethiopian organization with similar others. That being reality on the ground Oromo revolutionaries have no choice for the moment except saving whatever pride is left to save. Our elders knew that the struggle will be protracted and could take generations to triumph. The spirit of OLF will always be with those who truthfully struggle. Political party articulate interests of different groups in society and try to capture power by competing with others for their implementation. Habashaa political system does not entertain different political opinion or peaceful competition for power. To appear different TPLF allowed multi-parties to register but denied them performance.
Should ODP melting into EEP bother the Oromo? Yes and no. Though there was no genuine representation, a constitution was promulgated in 1995 in the name of nations, nationalities and peoples of the Ethiopian Empire. By it, theoretically a post empire federal structure was created in place of the imperial unitary one. But so many questions are left unanswered. Ethiopia is no more one country but collection of multi-countries of equals. They are those countries that should form a new union based on free will, equality, respect for each other’s interest and freedom. That entails recognizing the past and making a formal closure to it in African way. This is what Nafxanyaa system hopefuls have problem to swallow. Oromo agreed to form new union with the oppressor nation because of that recognition.
Now we are in a transitional period forced by change within the ruling EPRDF which was brought about with Oromo blood and sweat. With the change OPDO/EPRDF was accepted to continue in power in Oromiyaa and Ethiopia for the remaining part of its term. Ethiopia was assumed to be a multi-party country. But Habashaa nature of TPLF/EPRDF did not allow others to function. Therefore, political, military and economic power are all concentrated in the hands of one party, EPRDF, blurring the line between state and party. That is why ODP merging with members and allies that helped TPLF/EPRDF in its dictatorial governance for the past three decade is seen negatively. On face value Oromo are ruling themselves. But if ODP melts into EEP before the election even that face value will be lost. If we assume by miracle a fair and free election will be conducted EEP wins from among Ethiopianist part judgement of the people must be respected. Then the Oromo will address their question to it.
ODP as Oromo organization is member of the umbrella for Oromo organizations, Gaaddisa Hoggansa Oromoo (GHO) and its chair as such. By joining EEP, it is forfeiting Oromummaa. It also weakened GHO. Parties are mostly associations of individuals with similar political outlook not that of nations, nationalities and peoples. It is the compounding of national organizations into Ethiopian party that is suspected to be harbinger of changes to come in federal structure. Whatever intentions it cannot be viable without expressed will of nations and nationalities. EPRDF cadres talk of the new party not as a private organization but as if it was demanded by peoples and the only party. This is claiming elect of the people before election. There is no guarantee that EEP will not declare a one-party rule like many post liberation African countries. For Oromo, questions they have struggled for should have been answered before election. Nations and nationalities have to have extensive negotiation to give their will for a post empire system in which they are going to live together. It is only after that, that how to share or hold power has to be discussed.
Shunning Oromo cause by nationals is the continuation of quisling and opportunist practices of the past. To avoid eminent possible danger facing the Oromo nation at present, unity of Oromo organizations is imperative. Each organization has responsibility and accountability to strengthen principles of GHO to save Oromiyaa from humiliation and shame hovering over her. Selfishness and self-conceitedness of leaders has to be curbed. Each organization has own constituency, if they are united the constituencies will be united and if they are divided constituencies will also become divided, dividing the nation. Now what is wanted is to put Oromiyaa on strong base so that nothing can be done to her without her will. This can be easier if they could form a transitional strong front. In order to include all, constitutionally divide them into Yuba and Luba. Make all seniors Yuba and assign to them roles of judiciary, advisors to the Luba, cultural matters and veto power on certain points. By determining age limits, put all energetic, dedicated and knowledgeable persons loyal to Oromummaa and Gadaa principles in Luba. Luba is the forefront leader of the front. Together they will draw constitution and program of the front.
Settling all sticking points, Oromo organizations can go apart as competitors. It is not losing ODP that is worrisome but the way it may divide our people. Treachery is what Oromo are accustomed to from notables to riffraff. Because EPRDF has been ruling party for three decades, it is now difficult to foresee the effect of legal and political ramifications launching EEP could cause. Melting of ODP into Ethiopian party may or may not affect the Oromo depending on strength of commitment of freedom loving nationals. They have to be able to prevent more straw following it, because one straw is pulled out. As for the effect it may have on individuals in it, it is enough to remember the fate of the mighty Gobana Daaccee and all that followed his line so far. Something to note is also that the Nafxanyaa system had committed crime against humanity which does not have statute of limitations. It may be necessary to take it to court of justice post mortem. After the Nazis are gone positive opinion about them remains to incriminate. Discourses we hear from Amharic speaking elites are not made with new thinking that takes other peoples’ separate identities and interests into consideration, but with old Nafxanyaa colonial attitudes of contempt and subjugation. Stubborn and arrogant minds should not be allowed to spill more blood for a war they never win. Oromiyaan Haa Jiraattu.
